When I was a kid, I didn’t realize that my constant furniture rearranging was my first foray into interior design. I would shift my room around every few weeks, sketching out aerial views of where my furniture could go. Little did I know, I was already dabbling in space planning! Growing up in the 90s was an explosion of creativity, filled with Barbie dolls, Lisa Frank stickers, and epic video game marathons with my brother.

Our childhood was a tapestry woven with vibrant colors, imaginative play, and the occasional DIY project. Before my parents hit financial success, we had to invent our own toys. Milk cartons transformed into dollhouses, and cans became cities. This imaginative upbringing laid the foundation for my career in interior design, where I now get to channel that same creativity into vibrant, bold spaces.

Nostalgia is a powerful force, and it often influences our design choices more than we realize. The memories of those carefree days spent creating worlds out of nothing can inspire us to bring that same sense of wonder into our adult lives. As I look back on my childhood, I see how those early experiences shaped my aesthetic preferences and my desire to create spaces that evoke joy and comfort. Nostalgia isn’t just about reminiscing; it’s about integrating those cherished memories into our current lives.

By doing so, we can create environments that not only reflect who we are but also serve as a sanctuary of happiness.Tip: Use what you have! Repurpose items around the house for a unique and personal touch. Old boxes can become stylish storage solutions, and discarded furniture can be upcycled into something fabulous.

Nostalgia as Comfort

The pandemic in 2020 brought a wave of nostalgia as people sought comfort in familiar things. Suddenly, we were all looking for a sense of security in our homes, and nostalgia became a powerful form of escapism. For many, this meant surrounding themselves with elements from their childhood—anime, video games, and pop culture memorabilia.

It’s amazing how a simple figurine or a vintage poster can transport you back to a happier time. During those uncertain days, people turned to comfort foods, classic movies, and beloved childhood toys, realizing that these elements provided a sense of stability and warmth in a chaotic world. For me, this meant curating my space to reflect those joyful memories.

My home became a canvas where I could express my love for the things that made me happy as a child. I filled it with vibrant colors, quirky collectibles, and art that tells a story. Each piece serves as a reminder of the joy and creativity of my youth, creating an atmosphere that feels like a warm hug. By incorporating nostalgic elements, I’ve crafted a space that not only comforts me but also invites others to share in that joy.

It’s a reminder that our homes can be a reflection of our past while still being a vibrant part of our present. Tip: Identify what brings you joy from your past and find ways to incorporate those elements into your home decor. Whether it’s a favorite childhood toy, a beloved book, or artwork that reminds you of simpler times, let those pieces shine.

Be Bold, Be You

Before the pandemic, many homes were often decorated to impress others. The focus was on creating a polished, sophisticated look that adhered to societal standards of "adulting." Now, it’s all about personal expression.

My home is a riot of vibrant colors and collectibles from the 80s and 90s. From glass cabinets painted in "Friends" purple to a mini arcade featuring a Raspberry Pi with over 1000 games, my space is a testament to my love for nostalgia and creativity. I’ve loaded my cabinets with Back to the Future DVDs, Batman Beyond VHS tapes, and Mystery Science Theater figurines, each piece telling a story and sparking joy. Embracing boldness means stepping away from the fear of judgment and fully owning your unique style.

It’s about curating a space that feels authentic to you, even if it doesn’t conform to traditional design norms. My living room is a vibrant explosion of color and personality, where every item has significance. I believe that when you surround yourself with things that make you happy, your home becomes a true reflection of who you are. So why not showcase your quirks and passions?

After all, your home should be a celebration of your individuality! Tip: Don’t hide your personality. Let your home reflect who you are, even if it’s bold and unconventional. Use color and unique decor items to create a space that feels like you. Remember, it's your sanctuary!

The Power of Personalization

My partner and I have created a space that reflects both our tastes. We have a Rainbow Six collector's item and a record player from his DJ days, blending our styles into a cohesive home.

It’s important to create a space that both partners love, and that means finding common ground while still celebrating individual interests. Personalization is key in creating a harmonious living environment. By incorporating elements that resonate with both of us, we’ve fostered a sense of belonging and partnership in our home.

Moreover, personalization goes beyond just combining styles; it’s about creating a narrative that reflects our journey together. Each piece of decor tells a story—whether it’s a souvenir from a trip we took together or a gift that holds sentimental value. This shared history is what makes a house feel like a home. It’s essential to communicate openly about what each person loves and to find ways to integrate those preferences into the overall design.

This collaborative approach not only strengthens our bond but also results in a space that feels authentically "us."Tip: Work with your partner to incorporate both of your interests into your home decor. Create shared spaces that reflect your combined personalities, and don’t shy away from including quirky items that spark joy for both of you.

Embrace the Maximalist Aesthetic

In my office, I have a dedicated shrine to Sailor Moon, with a black and white theme that allows the colorful collectibles to pop. I’ve created a sophisticated yet playful atmosphere that feels both polished and fun. My office is a reflection of my passion for anime and a space where I can immerse myself in creativity.

By using contrasting colors and textures, I’ve managed to create an environment that inspires me daily. This balance of sophistication and whimsy is what makes maximalism so appealing—it allows for self-expression without sacrificing style. My kitchen is a disco party with over 15 disco balls, and my fridge is a gallery of family photos—a “fridge of fame,” if you will.

This maximalist approach is about creating a space that feels good to you, where every corner tells a story. I believe that our homes should be a joyful reflection of who we are, and maximalism allows for that exuberance. It’s a celebration of life, color, and creativity, inviting you to embrace the chaos and beauty of your surroundings.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to go big. Use color, patterns, and personal items to create a space that’s uniquely yours. Consider mixing textures and styles to add depth and interest to your decor.

Creating Playful Spaces

One of my favorite areas in my home is the mini arcade zone, where guests can enjoy a cocktail while playing classic games. It’s a nod to my childhood, where gaming was a way to bond with my brother. This area is designed for fun and nostalgia, featuring a cocktail Pac-Man and a stand-up arcade cabinet.

I want everyone who enters to feel the joy of playfulness, and this space serves as a reminder that life should be enjoyed. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating experiences and memories with friends and family.Playful spaces encourage interaction and engagement. They invite guests to let loose and enjoy themselves, breaking down the barriers of formality that often accompany adult living.

By designing areas that inspire fun, you create opportunities for connection and laughter. Whether it’s a game corner, a cozy reading nook, or a craft station, these spaces should reflect your interests and passions, inviting everyone to join in the joy.Tip: Designate a fun area in your home where you can unwind and enjoy activities that bring you joy. Whether it’s a game corner, a reading nook, or a craft station, make it a space that invites relaxation and creativity.

Your Home, Your Rules

The moral of the story is simple: your house is yours. Be unapologetically yourself and let your home reflect your personality. If you’re obsessed with the 80s or 90s, showcase it proudly. Your home should be a place where you feel comfortable and happy.

It’s essential to remember that design is subjective, and what works for one person may not work for another. Embrace your quirks and let your individuality shine through in every corner of your home. In a world where trends come and go, the most important thing is to create a space that resonates with you. Your home should be a sanctuary that reflects your journey, interests, and the things that make you smile.

By surrounding yourself with items that bring you joy, you create an environment that nurtures your spirit and fosters happiness.Tip: Use shadow boxes to display collectibles and memorabilia, turning them into art pieces that tell your story. This not only adds visual interest to your space but also sparks conversations with guests.

The Importance of Continuity

As you incorporate nostalgic elements, remember to maintain a sense of continuity throughout your home. I love high contrast with black and white, accented with metallics like gold and silver. This creates a regal yet playful base that allows my colorful items to shine without overwhelming the senses.

A cohesive design doesn’t mean everything has to match perfectly; rather, it’s about creating a harmonious flow that ties different areas of your home together.Continuity can be achieved through color palettes, textures, and materials. For instance, using similar colors in different rooms can create a sense of unity, while varying textures adds depth and interest.

This thoughtful approach ensures that your home feels curated and intentional, allowing your unique style to shine through without feeling chaotic. Remember, the goal is to create an environment that feels cohesive and inviting, where each element complements the others.Tip: Create a cohesive color palette to tie different areas of your home together. This doesn’t mean everything has to match perfectly, but a consistent theme can help your space feel more unified.

Celebrate Your Journey

Finally, remember to celebrate your journey. Your home is a reflection of your life experiences, interests, and the things that make you smile. Every piece of decor has a story, whether it’s a vintage find from a flea market or a cherished gift from a loved one.

This personal history is what makes a house feel like a home. As you curate your space, take the time to reflect on the memories associated with each item and how they contribute to the overall vibe of your home.

Celebrating your journey also means embracing change. As we grow and evolve, so do our tastes and interests. Allow your home to evolve with you, incorporating new pieces that resonate with your current self. This dynamic approach to design ensures that your space remains a true reflection of who you are, allowing you to create a home that feels alive and vibrant.Tip: Take the time to curate your space thoughtfully.

As you add new items, consider their significance and how they contribute to the overall vibe of your home. In conclusion, by embracing nostalgia and personal expression, you can create a home that’s not only stylish but also deeply personal and comforting. So go ahead, break the rules, and design a space that’s truly yours. After all, your home is a canvas—paint it with the colors of your life!
